Some Great Links for Foodies!

Sorry, no recipe this week, spent most of yesterday at work and sleeping. The reason for this is  I had to drop my daughter off for a school trip at 5am and a skunk or cat kept the dogs barking all night. So yesterday was pretty much a blow off. That leaves today to catch up on everything which means  no time for cooking.

That’s OK though, because it gives me a chance to share some of the great sites I come across in my day job as a web developer. So here are some sites I thought were worth passing on.


Lets start out with a great site for converting weights and measures. This is a very extensive conversion site, maybe a little too extensive. But if your looking to convert Hogsheads (USA or UK  ) into #10 cans, this is the site for you They also have conversions for butter, weight to volume, and oven temperature, check that out here.


Next we have Lodge Cast Iron Cookware. This is the site for everything you need to know about cast iron cookware. Be sure to check out the history and the Cornbread festival. As I stated in several posts you can find your cast iron cookware at a garage sale or a Goodwill type shop. (I have yet to find anything) If you can’t this is a great place to find what you need.


This one is just plain weird. I have yet to try this but it looks kind of fun. Just insert uncooked spaghetti into chunks of hot dogs and then cook. See the original post here.

Update: 06-11-09  One of my loyal readers, Sheila, said she tried this and it was really hard to stick the spaghetti through the hot dogs. I suggested trying a skewer first. Let me know if this helps.

Here is a great article from Mark Bittman in the New York Times. Microwave Popcorn, Minus the Ripoff. Ive done this myself with Indian Corn still on the cob. I just smeared it with a little butter, tossed it in a bag, put it in the microwave, and let her rip till it stopped popping. It was great, I think I did this in the spring with Indian corn from the fall.


And for my last helpful site I give University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension in Lancaster County and there page on reducing recipes. This is some great information from a trusted source. You can even download a PDF of the page for future reference.

    It looks pretty cool! I’m not sure how cool my 20 year old or 15 year old will think it is but I’m sure the ynger kids will like it.

  3. Okay that was a pain in the butt!! trying to get spaghetti THRU slices of hot dogs, not easy! have LOTS of patience if you want to try this. Yes my kids thought it was fun food.

    Did you try sticking the hot dogs through with a skewer first?
